The Lion King at Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center

The saga of Disney’s The Lion King begins in a fictional region of the African savanna; set in The Pride Lands, the young heir Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his jealous uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become ruler himself. The first part's course of events leads to the young prince's exile from The Pride Lands and the account of his consequent journey back to bring peace to his lands and citizens.

The musical, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and historical texts given its context. The plot itself is actually founded on previously existing African warriors and real events – Simba actually equates to the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was justly named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female in the history of Broadway to earn a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, specifically with outfits used, which resulted in a precise Broadway production of the show. The costumes alone are perfect representations of a few indigenous groups in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s costume in the musical which in fact copied from Kenyan Maasi fighters' outfits. Just like the previous 1994 movie, the fantastic musical score penned by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African roots, with the live adaptation even putting in numbers with lyrics that are sung either partly or fully in African tongue like Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African theme is also noticeable in choreography, with several of the numbers consistently featuring the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.

The 3D puppetry, African influence, and superb acting all merge effortlessly to deliver an incredible musical.
