The tale of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a fictional land in Africa; based in The Pride Lands, the teenage Prince Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the deeds of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his impulse to take the throne and become the ruling monarch himself. The first part's sequence of incidents leads to Simba's escape from his home and the account of his consequent return to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.
The Lion King, since its formation, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African civilization and history given the play's setting. The plot itself is actually based on historical African heroes and factual happenings – Simba being the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Malian Empire who was appropriately named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female in Broadway history to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, particularly design, which paved the way for a precise live adaptation of The Lion King. The outfits alone are respectful representations of some traditional people in Africa, an exemplification of which is Simba’s garb in the play which in fact copied from Kenyan Maasi fighters' attire. Just like the original 1994 movie, the remarkable musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African inspiration, with the musical even including numbers with lyrics that are performed either partly or completely in African tongue like Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African motif is also noticeable in dance numbers, with many of the dances showing off the grace of Bali-inspired choreography.
