The Lion King at Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center

The tale of The Lion King starts in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the young lion Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the actions of his evil uncle Scar and his intention to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become the ruling monarch himself. The first half's series of occurrences leads to the young prince's escape from The Pride Lands and the story of his consequent journey back to bring peace to his lands and citizens.

The musical, since its formation, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African culture and history given its content. The story itself is actually based on real African warriors and actual events – Simba as an example is the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Malian Empire who was justly referred to The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to gain a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, especially costume design, which paved the way for a precise Broadway production of The Lion King. The costumes alone are respectful portrayals of several indigenous groups in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s outfit in the show which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the previous 1994 motion picture, the fantastic musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African heritage, with the stage adaptation even including numbers with lyrics that are performed either partly or entirely in African languages such as Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African theme is also evident in dance numbers, with several of the performances consistently featuring the fluidity of Bali-inspired dance.

The costume design, music, and stellar performances all merge effortlessly to carry out an breathtaking musical.
